Our Mission and Vision

The Union of Non-Tenure-Track Faculty (UNTF) at Michigan State University, a member of American Federation of Teachers and one of nineteen AFT higher education unions in Michigan, was founded in 2010. We are an inclusive community of professional teachers known for our pedagogical excellence, commitment to students, and support of underrepresented groups across the MSU campus.

We envision a professional world at Michigan State University in which faculty in all systems and ranks are treated equally.

We unite teaching-focused faculty through collective bargaining and political action in order to build economic, professional, social, and political power in service of our vision.

Our Contract

Job Security

The Union has negotiated five-year rolling contracts for teaching focused faculty with 4 years of seniority who pass a performance evaluation.

Salary Increases

UNTF has worked hard to increase minimum salaries for all ranks. In 2025, the minimum salary for an Assistant Professor will be $61,901, a 62% increase of the 2015 minimum of $38,064.

Pathways to Promotion

In our latest contract, the Union negotiated access to a regular promotion schedule for all teaching focused faculty.
